The Spring Azure was originally believed to be a single species which contained both a spring and summer form, with differences between males and females. It is now believed there are several different species of azures, with many varieties among them. Until lepidopterists can agree on how to categorize the azures, I will list all my azures as Spring Azures. I had three azures in my garden at one time in 2002 - a new record. The top-left picture is a female, as the males don't have a thick, black border on their forewings. The one underneath it is the most common type of Azure to visit my garden. The two on the right were new to my garden in 2002, and I saw the top one again in 2003. |
