Broad-winged Skipper

The Broad-winged Skipper is among the most common butterflies to visit my garden these days.  I've never seen more than one in my garden at any time until the 2000 season.  Since then, I usually see as many as a dozen at the same time during their peak.  Most are rather dull when their wings are folded up over their backs, having only faint markings.  The one pictured at right is one of the few well-marked exceptions.  The males have yellow markings on their fore wings above, while the females have white markings.  There is no mistaking their brilliant flash of orange when they suddenly take flight.
