The Silver-spotted Skipper is a frequent visitor to my garden. Its caterpillars feed on Black Locust trees behind my house. Having three or four of them in the garden at the same time used to be normal. The record prior to 2003 was more than fifteen of them at one time. Over the past several years, their numbers had declined, and it was unusual to see more than one in the garden at any given time. There was a huge population explosion of Silver-spotted Skippers in 2003. One day I counted more than two dozen of them, and there were probably around thirty! Hopefully, their numbers will remain high in the coming years. |
