Unidentified Skippers

These are skippers that I have been unable to identify.  I have Audubon's Field Guide, but the skipper pictures and descriptions leave much to be desired, making skipper identification difficult.  And there really aren't any good butterfly sites on the internet.  Do a search for a particular skipper and you'll get pictures of a dozen different butterflies.  If you can identify any of these, please e-mail me and let me know.  I have added one new species - Skipper F, which may be the same as Skipper D.  I have also removed a picture from my Zabulon Skipper page and placed it here as Skipper G.

Skipper A

Unidentified Skipper

I believe I took these two pictures in the spring of 2002.  They both have black at the base of their hindwings, and have pale gray patches at the forewing tips and outer margins of both wings.  I originally thought they were dull male Sachems, but they lack the outer margin fringe the Sachem has on its wings.

This butterfly also looks like a male Sachem, with the exception of the black markings on its hindwing and thicker forewing spots.  It's possible the black markings are just missing scales.

Skipper C

Unidentified Skipper

I suspect this butterfly might be a Tawny-edged Skipper, but can't say for sure.  It has a pair of small orangey spots near the forewing tip, and another pair of spots closer to its body.

Skipper D

I have absolutely no idea what kind of butterfly this might be.

Skipper E

Unidentified Skipper

This butterfly looks a lot like Skipper C, but it lacks the fore wing spots, and appears to have more pointed forewings.

Skipper F

This skipper looks like Skipper D when viewed from above.  The picture at top right was taken at the Rutgers Display Gardens.  The other three were taken in my garden on a day when a pair of them were all over my Purple Coneflowers.  I suspect these may be Northern Broken Dash skippers.

Skipper G

I originally had this butterfly listed as a Zabulon Skipper.  Upon closer inspection, it doesn't appear to be a Zabulon after all.
