Centranthus ruber - Jupiter's Beard

Centranthus ruber - Jupiter's Beard

Jupiter's Beard begins blooming in mid-May and just doesn't stop.  It has its biggest bloom in June, continues flowering through the summer, and has another large bloom in October.  It always has some flowers on it when I do my final garden clean-up in early December.  The plants take a few years to reach their final size, which in my garden is about 3' high, and 3' wide.  It lives quite a few years, but will eventually die.  Dividing this plant is usually not an option, as it grows from one thick, woody root.  You will always have some seedlings growing around this plant, as it grows easily from seed.  Let a few of these seedlings grow to use as replacements when the time comes.  Centranthus ruber - Jupiter's Beard Jupiter's Beard is a very good butterfly plant, attracting many types of butterflies.
