My sassafras started growing in 1991 as a sucker from the roots of a tree that had been cut down two years earlier. It grew like crazy! This picture was taken when the tree was ten years old. The wall behind it is almost 11' high. The leaves of the sassafras come in four different shapes. There's a normal-shaped leaf, the two-lobed leaf (left-fingered and right-fingered), and the three-lobed leaf. The crushed leaves, as well as the wood, give off a lemony fresh scent. Spicebush Swallowtail butterflies lay their eggs on it. Japanese Beetles will feed on the leaves, but I have them under control. |
